DC Entertainment confirms it's going to make standalone superhero movies

The "side label" has a name, and we'll find out what it is soon.

Following the critical mauling of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, and the massive success of Wonder Woman, DC Entertainment has switched up its game.

The company's Geoff Johns (chief creative officer) and Diane Nelson (DC Entertainment president) have been outlaying their plans to Vulture, and that standalone film about the Joker that isn't played by Jared Leto is just the start.

Alongside the one continuity of their DC Extended Universe (a name DC didn't even come up with, and actually don't like to use, by the way), the studio plans to release movies on a "side label" that won't be set in the same universe as the main ones.

Johns also revealed that they'll announce the name of this side project "soon-ish", which will be helpful because explaining it all is a bit confusing.

Basically, it's like how Marvel and Sony are both doing Spider-Man movies. Or how Disney and Warner Bros are both doing The Jungle Book films. Except this time, it's all from one studio.

If that's not enough to wrap your head around, the main DCEU is undergoing some changes too, but these ones are going to make it more simplified as a casual version.

"Our intention, certainly, moving forward is using the continuity to help make sure nothing is diverging in a way that doesn't make sense, but there's no insistence upon an overall story line or interconnectivity in that universe," Nelson said.

Which basically means expect more films like Wonder Woman, which tell a self-contained story without necessarily setting up links to other DC films.

So if you thought that Dawn of Justice spent too long setting up things that will hopefully pay off in Justice League, you're in luck.

Justice League will hit cinemas on November 17.
